Introduction

The Sony Alpha SLT A58 Digital SLR Camera is a budget friendly digital SLR camera with high imaging performance. The A58 has 20.1 MP APS-C-sized Exmor HD APS CMOS sensor, a high-quality sensor in this price range. It also has Sony’s BIONZ image processor,  ISO up to 16000 and fast performance that enables up to 5fps full-resolution continuous shooting.    Like all Sony A-mount cameras, it uses the companies’ proprietary Translucent Mirror Technology, which directs light to both the image sensor and focus sensor simultaneously. This enables the 15-point AF system to work continuously even while recording video and photographing in a continuous shooting mode. The SVGA OLED EVF has a 1,440k-dot resolution, quite reasonable in its class. The rear 2.7″ 460.8k-dot Clear Photo LCD monitor features a tilting design enabling you to shoot from both high and low angles.

Sony Alpha SLT-A58 Digital SLR Camera In Use

The Sony Alpha SLT A58 is an entry level DSLR,  replacing the Sony SLTA37 even though naming suggests it might be the successor to the SLTA57. sony alpha slt a58

The CMOS sensor has been upgraded to 20.1 MP, and the viewfinder is now an OLED Tru-Finder compared to LCD in the A37  which produces a sharp and bright image. Sony have done a excellent job in keeping size down. It does feel very plastic in hand, but at this price one can’t complain. I would suggest upgrading the kit lens to something like a SAL1650, to take full advantage of the nice  Exmor HD APS CMOS sensor.

Overall the Sony Alpha SLT A58 offers great value for money and produces some solid images and excellent performance. It isn’t overly complicated and is a nice introduction to using a DSLR with the benefit of full auto for when you just need to take pictures without thinking too much about the technical aspects of photography.

I own this camera for about one year now. Picture quality is very high, the full auto mode works great in practice. If i may mention one con, it would be the small buffer when writing to SD card.
