Sony A7II 5-axis image stabilisation bug

Sony A7II 5-axis image stabilisation problems

Introduction

As you are probably aware, the new Sony A7II uses a 5-axis sensor image stabilisation system that allows image stabilisation with Sony as well as third party lenses and adapters. It seems this latest Full Frame E-mount camera was rushed to market, and they are letting the consumer test the firmware, as a few problems have arisen with the uses of the 5-axis image stabilisation.

The A7II disables some or all of IBIS when a native OSS lens is attached, enables IBIS when a native non-OSS lens is attached, and just retains its previous IBIS state when a foreign lens is attached and the camera. Presumably can’t tell whether it has in-lens image stabilisation.

These are some of the bugs reported:

  1. If you attach a 3rd party lens after using an OSS lens, then IBIS does not work.
  2. If you attach a 3rd party lens after using a non-OSS lens, then IBIS does work.

Lenses tested with erratic 5-Axis stabilisation behaviour:

24-70 f4 Sony- Zeiss lens and legacy adapter without electronic contact: no stabilisation
Sony Zeiss 24-70 f4 + 24-70 f2.8 Canon and adapter without electric contact: no stabilisation
Sony Zeiss 24-70 f4 + 24-70 f2.8 Canon OSS ON and adapter with electronic communications (Metabones III): no stabilisation
Sony Zeiss 24-70 f4 + 85 f1.2 II Canon ( OSS OFF): stabilisation
85 F1.2 II Canon 24-70 f2.8 IS + Canon OS Off I + III :Metabones stabilisation works

Sony A7IIConclusion

It was a strange move on Sony’s part to release the Sony A7II suddenly, and it appears without thorough testing of the camera firmware. I’m sure these issues can be easily fixed with a firmware update, but I’d suggest waiting until this happens before purchasing a Sony A7II.
